Welcome

Welcome to the SPROG website

We are a group of grandparents who live in the Lancashire area, that formed a support network called SPROG in March 2008, this was designed for grandparents like ourselves, who for many different reasons are now bringing up their grandchildren on a permanent basis, with either a Residence Order, or a Special Guardianship Order.

As we are now bringing up our grandchildren in the role of parent,  this can sometimes set us aside from our friends whose children are now adults and have children of their own, where some of our peers are often enjoying a typical grandparent/grandchild relationship.

Why SPROG Was Founded

Within a short period of time three grandparents were introduced to each other, after a lengthy conversation they all realised that they felt a sense of frustration and isolation.

This new situation can possibly lead to also having to deal with an emotional rollercoaster, when this was a result from their own child's (son/daughter's) inability to be a good parent.  This sometimes can be the basis of many other problems experienced.

As now not only do they have the parental responsibility to their grandchild, but they also still have the emotional bond/ connection as well as responsibility to their own child (son/daughter), who after all is their grandchild's parent.

Limited help is available for grandparents in these types of situations, but identifying where and how to obtain this help can be an uphill struggle.

It then occurred that there must be more grandparents in the same situation, and so this is why SPROG was founded, so that we can reach out to others in the same situation who may need contact with other grandparents in a similar situation to themselves.

What We At SPROG Can Offer

Our aim is to provide emotional and/or practical support via, telephone, email, text, or personal visits.

We can offer contact on a regular basis and try to meet up regularly, like having evening meals together once a month, days out, or even picnics at the park

Not only do we offer support to each other, but we also encourage the grandchildren to interact with each other in a friendly informal entertaining environment, so that they can know that they are not alone in living with their grandparents as their main carer.
